Sanrio (株式会社サンリオ) is currently most known for their iconic character - Hello Kitty, a trans-species girl. They happen to also own the rights to over 9,000 other mascots that turned out to be a failure such as Little Cottonwood Cottage, The Utensils or Pita.
The company plays a big role in the entertainment industry, even making cafes and stores for their beloved fans. Sanrio makes all kinds of products for their fanbase to enjoy, starting from toys to lovely fashion items.

Hello Kitty - Sanrio's main trademark, a white and blue overalls and a bright yellow t-shirt. Nips have been trying to make her the president of USA since 2012.
Cinnamoroll - That's not a bunny. (Keep it in mind or else weebs will feel very hurt!)
Kuromi - That's an emo bunny.
My Melody - Another bunny as if they didn't have enough of lapin like characters.
Pompompurin - Perfectly shows Japs degenerated fetishes.
Keroppi - A frog in white and red clothes, nothing particulary interesting.

The Origins

The company was first founded on August 10 1960 under a different name, Yamanashi Silk Company. At first they produced mainly silk products like ties and scarves.
Shintaro Tsuji noticed it's easier to sell products with cute designs on them. That's when he decided to take a shortcut in making a well prospering brand and acquire the japanese licensing rights to Peanuts, to earn some quick buck.
After some time Sanrio decided to start making characters on their own and hired many designers.

Controversies

• Copycat case

Creators of Miffy (designed in 1955) saw Cathy (created in 1974) as a copyright infringement of their original character. Cathy was retired in 2011 after the court decided the characters are way too similar to each other. There was an attempt an counter suing the Miffy's creators' company but as expected, it failed.

• Database leak 2015

3.3 million of peoples' who registered on a website SanrioTown and websites like hellokitty.com and mymelody.com, personal data - names, birth dates, email addresses, passwords got leaked online.
At least 180,000 of information leaked belonged to children.

• 2019 Sanrio fine

In 2019 the company got fined 6,222,000 euro by European Commission for restrictions put on selling their official products to other countries within the EEA.

• 2022 tax

In 2022 Sanrio got fined 1.3 billion yen for suspected utilizing it's workers in Honk Kong and Taiwan to avoid paying any taxes. What was seen by some as violation against the anti tax haven laws in Japan.

• The removal of videos

Sanrio scrubbed all of the old official Youtube videos with Hello Kitty after the former voice actor of her - Megumi Hayashibara, left in 2023. What made the fans butthurt was the date of the videos deletion which was a day after Hello Kitty's 49th anniversary.

• 2025 Lawsuit against Sanrio

Studio Comet decided to file a lawsuit against Sanrio for using "their" character. The Company claimed that Kuromi wasn't designed by Sanrio's designers but by a Studio Comet's worker, Tomoko Miyagawa.
On the other hand, Sanrio in their book from 2023 stated that the orginal artist behind Kuromi is Hiroko Yamaguchi.

• Boonchuka

The corporation made wholesome characters to support the BLM movement.
Hannah and Sambo are African characters from 1980s. In their universum there also appear Bimbo, Madonna, Jumbo, Farina, Kowanie and Hannah and Sambo's mother.
Another similiar Sanrio universe is Bibinba.

MMO game that got shut down in 2007.
The game took place in Sanrio Fantastic World, you couldn't do much there besides walking and chatting with minors.

Hello Kitty Seasons

A console game released in 2010.
In the game you run errands around Kitty's Town.

Hello Kitty online

MMORPG Shut down after 9 years in 2017, used to be a free to play multiplayer game for e girls.
In the game the player had the mission to help Hello Kitty defeat a "mysterious and malevolent power".

Hello Kitty Island Adventure

Less interactive Animal Crossing ripoff.
The only game that at least tries to include more than the 5 widely known characters.

Hello Kitty: Skyland

A free to play VR game with multiplayer option if you wish to fap to animated animals with your friends.

• Hello kitty is not just a cat

After many people arguing wether Hello Kitty is a cat or a girl the theory got confirmed by her creator. It's a human girl named Kitty White.

• Cancer theory

Some retards came up with the idea that Hello Kitty has been created by a Chinese woman who wanted to help her dying child. They say she tried going to many hospitals and doctors but none of them could save her. The mother finnaly decided to make a deal with Satan to create Hello Devil in return for healing her daughter from mouth cancer, which was supposed to explain why Hello Kitty has no mouth.

The merchandise of Sanrio has a big variety of characters to choose from. You can look for items with Hello Kitty or... Hello Kitty or maybe even...Hello Kitty? Occasionally you might also happen to find something with Kuromi, My Melody and Cinnamoroll. If you're a fan of any other mascot, the chances of you finding something for yourself are lower than the chances of losing your virginity.
